Beginning in 2003, ACCESS adopted the Character Based Literacy Program.  A project of the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University, Character Based Literacy (CBL) integrates character-rich themes connected to units of study in Language Arts and Social Sciences.  The Character Based Literacy Program focuses on literature that covers six thematic units over the course of the year and the CBL Reading List covers a wide range of topics for grades 6-12.

Monthly Teacher Collaborative meetings provide opportunities for on-going training, peer coaching, support and additional writing of lessons aligned to California Common Core Standards.
